January 12, 2009
As the first semester ends and we enter 2009, the Unified Catholic Schools are looking toward the future with hope for our families. In accordance with our mission to provide a wholistic education to our young people, and in consideration of these challenging economic times, Bishop Sheridan has directed our schools to freeze tuition rates for the school term beginning in August 2009.
Two years ago, we implemented a new diocesan wide Parish Tithe Tuition Assistance Fund. Each of the 42 parishes throughout the ten counties in our diocese contributes 2% of their offertory to the fund to assist families with demonstrated need. Now, in its second year, the fund made it possible to award over $500,000 this year to nearly 250 families. I am pleased to announce that Bishop Sheridan and the diocesan leadership have agreed to continue the fund for the 2009-2010 school term and in future years.
Applications for tuition assistance are evaluated by Tuition Aid Data Services (TADS) and all applications are confidential. Any families who choose to seek financial assistance are strongly encouraged to submit applications by March 31st in order to be considered for assistance from the diocesan fund. Applications are available online at www.tuitionaid.com.
The Diocese of Colorado Springs remains committed to sustaining our schools. To honor this commitment, we will endeavor to strengthen the operational efficiencies at each location. We need your help. Please register as early as possible so that we can manage the size and number of sections for each grade in as efficient manner as possible. To encourage early enrollment, we are offering a payment plan for the $150 application fee. Contact your local school for specific information.
As the US Bishops' document entitled, "Renewing Our Commitment to Catholic Elementary and Secondary Schools in the Third Millennium" states in the conclusion: "our Catholic Schools are a vital part of the teaching mission of the Church. The challenges ahead are many, but our spirit and will to succeed are strong. We, the Catholic bishops of the United States, in cooperation with the total Catholic community, are committed to overcome these challenges. Adversity often brings out the best in men and women. We must respond to challenging times with faith, vision, and the will to succeed because the Catholic school's mission is vital to the future of our young people, our nation, and most especially our Church."
